Information for High School Students
|
 |
We invite high school students to attend on Saturday, March 20. Students who register and attend the conference have the opportunity to apply for college scholarships as well. IPC is a national conference designed to support, encourage and educate underrepresented minority women in mathematics. The conference hosts professionals and high school, college and graduate students.
Activities on Saturday that are appropriate for high school students include:
-
Keynote Lecture: Dr. Ruth Gonzalez (PhD in Math, Rice University) will speak about her career as a geophysical mathematician at Exxon and the obstacles she faced as a first generation Mexican-American and a woman.
-
The FUNction Room - a “hospitality suite” for high school students to engage in math games and brain teasers.
-
Careers with a Foundation in Math - A panel of women who studied math talk about their careers in different fields.
-
Equity and Access in Education - Laila Hasan, former math teacher and professor in the school of education, will lead a workshop on the mathematics curriculum in high schools in high vs. low income communities and how to address inequities.
Additionally, high school seniors are invited to apply for a college scholarship made possible by the Oracle Corporation. Six scholarships will be awarded to students who intend to major in mathematics or statistics; other related majors (engineering, computer science) will be considered as well. Short interviews will be conducted with finalists on Saturday morning, so attendance at IPC is required. The scholarship awardees will be announced during the Etta Falconer Awards Banquet on Saturday evening.
Finally, high school students who register will be matched up with a mentor for the day! The student will prepare a poster about the mentor’s life to display at the conference, and the student and mentor will have a chance to meet.
Interested students should complete the application form online at www.ipcmath.org/conf_details.html. You will receive an email following their registration with more information about the scholarship, poster, and mentor.
