Department of Mathematics, Georgetown University
Assistant Professor of Statistics
What is your educational background?
B.S. and M.A., University of Maryland College Park (Mathematics). Ph.D., The George Washington University (Statistics).
What is the best part of what you do?
Having the ability to focus on many different application areas, instead of being confined to only one such area. I've worked in statistical methods relating to reliability, genetics, and business.
Why do you like mathematics and/or statistics?
I've always like mathematics and statistics. Math was always my favorite subject. Further, I like statistics because it is such a powerful and significant resource in all areas of application and life. Every semester, I convince my students that all aspects of life can be analyzed with statistics, and statistics can be used to describe all aspects of life. As a statistician, our goal is to seek out the truth... it's like solving a mystery!
What resources have helped you?
My family and friends were hugely helpful in helping me to persevere.
What do you like to do for fun?
Spending time with my family and friends
What was the best piece of advice you received?
To keep my eyes on the prize, and never give up on my dreams.
What do most people not know about mathematics/mathematicians?
Just how versatile the field and related knowledge is to other areas and other fields. There are fields that may not consistently require quantitative expertise, but can nonetheless appreciate strong logic skills. What better place to build these traits but in the mathematical sciences!
