ADVANCE to a Faculty Position

By Dr. Patricia Hale

Although many programs have been in existence to increase the number of minority women in the Mathematical Sciences, the number of minority women faculty at universities is still unreasonably small, even at minority serving institutions such as California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly).

At Cal Poly we are addressing the inequities that may contribute to this situation at an institutional level and are actively recruiting women of color to join our faculty through our newly-funded NSF ADVANCE Project.  Women of color who are working on a graduate degree in a STEM discipline are encouraged to come to Cal Poly for one to three quarters to teach mathematics, science, or engineering, and continue their research.

Participants in the Cal Poly ADVANCE Project will be matched with both a research and teaching mentor to enhance their career goals.  If the participant is interested in obtaining a Ph.D., the mentors can aid the participant in completing an application for the Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive (CDI) Program, which provides up to $30,000 in loans that are forgiven if the participant teaches at any California State University (CSU) upon completion of her Ph.D.

To apply for this program the applicant must have a CSU faculty advisor which the ADVANCE Program gives women the opportunity to obtain.  Cal Poly is hoping to support women in mathematics by giving them the opportunity to enhance their research and teaching abilities, and to obtain additional funding.  Our hope is that in return women will want to start their careers at Cal Poly, in particular, or at a California State University, in general.  Find out more about ways California is recruiting female mathematicians, engineers and scientists to this beautiful state!
